During tax season, the Internal Revenue Service receives a noticeable increase in requests for Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers as taxpayers prepare a U.S. federal income tax return. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service issues Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers for federal tax purposes to individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security Number.
