IRS E-Filing Reaches Record Levels for 2025 Tax Returns

electronic filing has reached its highest level in U.S. tax administration history, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The 2025 tax year saw nearly all individual tax returns filed electronically, according to new filing-season statistics. The shift highlights how digital tools have reshaped the way taxpayers prepare and file federal taxes.

Electronic Filing Dominates Federal Tax Return Submissions

Electronic filing now accounts for the vast majority of federal tax returns submitted each year. Filing season data from the Internal Revenue Service shows that 154.9 million income tax returns were filed electronically in 2025, representing about 94 percent of all federal return submissions.

Paper filings continue to decline as more taxpayers rely on tax preparation software and online tools to file their taxes before the annual tax deadline. Only about 11 million tax returns were submitted on paper, reflecting the growing reliance on electronic tax return systems.

Most individual filers submit Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR using tax software or IRS-approved software through authorized e-file providers. Electronic systems allow taxpayers to attach supporting schedules, such as Schedule 1 or Schedule C, along with income reporting documents, including Forms W-2, 1099-K, 1099-DA, and other Form 1099 series records.

Digital Filing Helps Taxpayers Receive Refunds Faster

Electronic filing offers a significant advantage in the processing of refunds. Taxpayers who submit an electronic tax return and select direct deposit generally receive refunds more quickly than those who submit paper filings.

Refunds issued through electronic filing and Automated Clearing House transfers typically arrive within about 21 days, when accurate bank accounts and account information are included on the federal return. Electronic submission also provides confirmation that a return has been accepted, helping taxpayers verify their filing and track refund status.

Free File Programs and Tax Software Expand Digital Access

Several developments have helped expand access to electronic filings during the filing season. Free filing programs and widely available tax software have lowered barriers for millions of taxpayers who previously relied on paper forms.

Online preparation tools guide taxpayers through the filing process and help ensure that an income tax return includes the correct schedules, income reports, and deductions required under federal tax law provisions.

Free File Options Allow Millions to Submit Returns Online

The IRS Free File program allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and submit their income tax return online at no cost. For the 2025 filing season, IRS Free File is available to individuals with adjusted gross income of up to $89,000.

Eligible taxpayers can access the 2025 Certified Free File Software, which provides guided preparation tools to calculate credits and deductions, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Many taxpayers also rely on tax filing software or guided tax software offered by commercial software providers.

These platforms often automatically import Form W-2, confirm the taxpayer’s Social Security number, and verify entries such as prior-year AGI used for electronic signature authentication.

Commercial Software Providers and Tax Professionals Increase E-Filing

Commercial software providers and licensed tax professionals continue to play a central role in electronic filing. Many taxpayers choose to work with tax preparers who use IRS-approved software and e-file applications to submit returns electronically.

Tax preparers who transmit electronic returns must obtain an Electronic Filing Identification Number and participate in the federal e-file program. According to filing season statistics, about 67 million tax returns were self-prepared and submitted electronically, while roughly 87.9 million returns were filed by tax professionals.

Tax preparers often include additional forms when filing a federal return, including Form 4868 for a filing extension or Form 1040-X when correcting an amended income tax return.

Modernized E-File Platform Handles Millions of Annual Filings

Electronic tax return submissions rely on the Modernized e-File Platform, a digital processing system that manages millions of filings each year. The system allows the Internal Revenue Service to process electronic tax returns through a secure infrastructure that meets federal security standards.

The platform accepts several types of filings beyond individual income tax returns. These include corporate filings such as Form 1120, employment tax returns including Forms 940, 941, 943, 944, and 945, and corrected employment filings including Forms 941-X, 943-X, and 945-X.

Specialized filings such as the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return (Form 2290) may also be submitted electronically. Businesses can also transmit federal/state business income tax filings through participating state tax filing programs operated by agencies such as the Minnesota and Nebraska Departments of Revenue.

Electronic Filing Reduces Errors and Improves Processing Speed

Electronic filing offers measurable advantages compared with paper tax returns. Digital filing systems help reduce common errors and allow returns to move through processing systems much faster.

Software validation checks ensure that key information, such as the Social Security number, employer identification number, and income documentation from Form W-2 or the Form 1099 series, matches the data entered on the return.

Built-In Software Checks Reduce Filing Errors

Most IRS-approved software includes built-in validation tools that identify errors before an electronic tax return is transmitted. These systems review required information and detect missing schedules, incorrect calculations, or incomplete entries related to credits and deductions.

According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, the error rate for electronic filing is estimated to be below 1 percent. Paper returns, which must be manually entered into IRS systems, can have error rates of up to 20 percent.

Direct Deposit Accelerates Refund Delivery

Electronic filing also improves refund processing times. When taxpayers choose direct deposit, refunds are transferred via the Automated Clearing House network to designated bank accounts.

During the 2025 filing season, more than 103 million refunds were issued, with over 90 percent delivered through direct deposit. Taxpayers can monitor refund status through online tools such as the IRS Individual Online Account or the Where’s My Refund service available on IRS.gov.

Digital Tools Help Taxpayers Track Returns and Manage Payments

Taxpayers who have not yet filed their federal return still have several electronic filing options available before the tax deadline. Returns may be submitted through IRS Free File, commercial tax preparation software, or licensed tax professionals using approved e-file providers.

After submitting a return, taxpayers receive an acknowledgment confirming that the electronic tax return has been accepted. Electronic signatures often rely on a self-selected PIN, combined with the taxpayer’s prior-year AGI, for identity verification.

Taxpayers who owe federal taxes may schedule payments using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, authorize electronic funds withdrawal, or make payments by credit card or debit card through approved payment processors. These online tools allow taxpayers to manage tax debt, payment plans, and account information through the IRS Individual Online Account.
