IRS Direct File Closed After 2025 Filing Season

IRS Direct File, the free online system that allowed eligible taxpayers to submit a federal return directly to the Internal Revenue Service, operated during Tax Filing Season 2025 before being officially closed. The IRS confirmed in November 2025 that Direct File would not be available for Filing Season 2026, and no relaunch date has been announced.
IRS Moves Direct File From Pilot to Expanded Program
IRS Direct File began as a pilot during the previous filing season, targeting taxpayers with relatively simple tax returns. The Internal Revenue Service review found that IRS Direct File processed more than 140,000 accepted electronic tax return submissions after millions of taxpayers checked their eligibility before preparing their federal return.
The pilot helped the agency test guided digital filing tools and customer service features, such as live chat, while measuring taxpayer feedback through metrics like Net Promoter Score. The system relies on cloud computing infrastructure and user authentication tools to protect account information and reduce the risks of tax fraud and identity theft.
Following the pilot, the U.S. Department of the Treasury confirmed the IRS Direct File program would become a permanent option for filing federal taxes, reflecting the agency's broader modernization priorities.
Who Was Eligible to Use IRS Direct File
The IRS designed Direct File for taxpayers with relatively straightforward tax returns. Eligibility depended on state residency and whether income types fell within the categories supported by the platform.
Most eligible taxpayers reported wage income on Forms W-2 or Forms 1099 and claimed the standard deduction rather than itemizing deductions. The system calculated federal adjusted gross income and determined eligibility for common tax credits during the filing process.
Supported Income Types and Credits
IRS guidance indicated the platform supported many common income types and tax credits. Eligible filers could qualify for credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit, depending on their federal adjusted gross income and filing status.
The system collected key details such as a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, prior-year AGI, and other information required for electronic filing. Taxpayers with gig economy, rental, or business income were not eligible to use IRS Direct File, as those situations required more advanced tax preparation software.
Participating States During the 2025 Filing Season
For Tax Filing Season 2025, IRS Direct File was available in 25 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
State participation was relevant because many taxpayers also needed to file a state tax return. The IRS worked with state agencies and Department of Revenue offices to coordinate state tax filing options alongside the federal Direct File platform.
State Integration During the 2025 Season
In several participating states, federal return data could transfer to a state return tool after a taxpayer completes their federal return, reducing duplicate data entry. For example, Oregon taxpayers could transition from the federal Direct File platform to the state system through Revenue Online, managed by the Oregon Department of Revenue.
How the IRS Direct File Platform Worked
The Direct File platform used guided tax software to walk taxpayers through preparing a federal return step by step. Users answered questions about income, filing status, tax credits, and other required details, while the system automatically calculated federal income tax.
After reviewing the completed electronic tax return, taxpayers submitted it directly to the Internal Revenue Service via electronic filing. Taxpayers could then check their refund status through the IRS's Where's My Refund tool and receive email confirmation when the return was accepted.
Access and Identity Verification
Taxpayers signed in using an IRS online account before filing through Direct File, confirming their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number as part of the identity verification process. Taxpayers who previously filed through Direct File can no longer access those returns through the program's webpage, but may obtain a return transcript through their IRS Online Account or by mail.
Free Filing Reduced Tax Preparation Fees
One of Direct File's main benefits was cost savings. Eligible taxpayers could file their taxes directly with the government at no cost, avoiding tax preparation fees otherwise associated with commercial tax software.
The federal government continues to operate IRS Free File in partnership with private companies through the IRS and Free File Alliance. That program connects taxpayers with guided tax software from trusted partner providers and remains available for eligible filers at IRS.gov/freefile.
Other Free Filing Options Remain Available
With Direct File no longer available, taxpayers seeking no-cost filing options can turn to IRS Free File, which offers guided tax software through trusted private partners for those who qualify based on income, as well as Free File Fillable Forms for any income level.
The IRS also supports free assistance programs such as VITA/TCE, which help low-income taxpayers, older adults, and active-duty military prepare and submit tax returns.
Some taxpayers continue to use commercial tax preparation software or bank products such as refund anticipation loans. These services may include optional features like audit protection or calculation guarantees.
What Comes Next for Free Federal Filing
Although Direct File has been closed, Congress has directed the Treasury Department to study potential replacements. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21), enacted in 2025, allocated $15 million for a 90-day review of public-private partnership models that could provide free filing for a broad share of taxpayers. Treasury was assessing the feasibility of a new national e-file system at the time of the program's closure.
Taxpayers with complex situations — including those who itemize deductions, report business income, or manage investments — continue to need commercial tax preparation software or professional services. Additional filings, such as Form 1040NR for certain nonresident taxpayers, can be handled through IRS forms or other filing tools. A request for a filing extension using Form 4868 can be submitted online using IRS Free File's Guided Tax Software or Free File Fillable Forms.
