Small Business Outreach Programs Gain Momentum
Federal agencies are expanding outreach to entrepreneurs as small-business tax compliance and regulatory requirements become harder to manage. The IRS, the Small Business Administration, and the Treasury Department have expanded access to training, online tools, and in-person assistance to help owners avoid costly filing mistakes and penalties.
IRS Expands Access to Small Business Tax Help
The Internal Revenue Service has widened support services for entrepreneurs through new digital resources, extended office hours, and additional taxpayer assistance programs. During National Small Business Week, the agency promoted tools designed to help employers, self-employed workers, and sole proprietors understand filing rules, payroll taxes, recordkeeping obligations, and scam prevention.
The IRS Small Business and Self-Employed Tax Center remains a central hub for business tax guidance. Owners can use the platform to access employer tax information, electronic filing systems, payment options, and business tax account services. The agency has also expanded multilingual IRS assistance and interpreter services for taxpayers who need help in other languages.
In March 2026, the IRS announced longer weekday hours at more than 200 Taxpayer Assistance Centers and added Saturday openings at select locations through June. The expansion gives taxpayers more opportunities to receive face-to-face help with filing notices, identity verification, payment plans, and business account questions without missing a full workday.
Small Business Compliance Burdens Continue to Grow
Federal officials say outreach programs are becoming increasingly important because small-business tax compliance remains difficult for many firms. IRS Publication 583 explains that new business owners must make decisions involving entity structure, payroll withholding, accounting methods, worker classification, and filing deadlines while maintaining accurate records.
For smaller companies without in-house accountants or legal teams, those responsibilities can create significant pressure. Filing errors, missed payroll deposits, or incorrect worker classifications may lead to penalties and additional compliance costs that many small firms struggle to absorb.
According to the SBA Office of Advocacy, more than 80 percent of the federal paperwork burden on small businesses stems from IRS requirements. Agencies believe stronger education efforts and easier access to federal resources can reduce avoidable compliance mistakes before they escalate into audits or enforcement actions.
SBA Resource Partners Increase Local Outreach
The Small Business Administration continues to rely on local outreach networks to connect entrepreneurs with technical support and training. Through SBA district offices and SBA resource partners, business owners can receive free or low-cost counseling, workshops, and mentoring services.
Programs include Small Business Development Centers, SCORE mentors, Women’s Business Centers, and Veterans Business Outreach Centers. These organizations help entrepreneurs with tax compliance, financing, business planning, and federal contracting opportunities.
The SBA Learning Platform also offers online courses designed for businesses at different stages of growth, including disadvantaged and underserved firms seeking access to capital or government support programs.
Treasury Expands Technical Assistance for Underserved Firms
The Treasury Department has broadened support through the State Small Business Credit Initiative, a nearly $10 billion program that expands access to financing and provides technical assistance to smaller firms. Treasury officials said the initiative aims to help businesses become more prepared to qualify for federal and private funding opportunities.
In a 2023 expansion announcement, Treasury said additional funding would support legal, accounting, and financial advisory services for businesses applying for SSBCI and other government programs. The agency said the effort places special attention on sole proprietors, independent contractors, and historically underserved entrepreneurs.
Federal officials say stronger outreach programs also improve tax literacy and help owners better understand deductions, credits, filing requirements, and available financial assistance. Agencies believe those efforts could reduce long-term compliance problems while strengthening trust between small businesses and federal institutions.
Small Business Owners Are Encouraged to Use Federal Resources
Federal agencies continue urging entrepreneurs to use available support services before problems become larger financial or legal issues. Small business owners are encouraged to review IRS employer tax guidance, visit local SBA district offices, attend workshops, and use business tax account tools to manage tax obligations more efficiently.
Officials also recommend consulting qualified tax professionals for business-specific questions involving payroll taxes, entity selection, worker classification, and eligibility for credits or deductions.
