Michigan tax refund timing is in focus as the 2025 filing season continues, particularly for returns selected for identity verification. The Michigan Department of Treasury says refunds are processed daily, but timelines vary based on filing method, documentation, and whether additional review is required.

Michigan Expands Identity Checks to Protect Refunds

Treasury Requires Identity Confirmation for Some Returns

To reduce tax-related identity theft, the Michigan Department of Treasury requires certain taxpayers to verify their identity before a refund is released. Filers selected for verification receive an official letter instructing them to complete an online Identity Confirmation Quiz, according to the department’s guidance.

Taxpayers who complete the quiz are advised to print or save the confirmation page and retain it with their tax records. The department states that passing the quiz typically allows the return to continue through standard processing unless further review is triggered.

Treasury Directs Some Filers to Submit Documents by Mail

Taxpayers who cannot complete the Identity Confirmation Quiz online must verify their identity by mail. The Michigan Treasury requires copies of government-issued photo identification for the primary filer and spouse if filing jointly, along with all income documents reported on the return.

Income records may include W-2s, 1099s, SSA-1099 forms, Schedule K-1s, or a federal Schedule C. Filers must also include one supplemental document, such as a recent utility bill, bank statement, auto insurance record, or the final paycheck stub of the year. The department notes that returns submitted without the required paperwork are placed on hold, which can significantly delay refunds.

Treasury Outlines Standard Michigan Tax Refund Timelines

E-Filed Returns Move Through Processing Faster

For electronically filed returns, Michigan Treasury advises taxpayers to allow three to four weeks from the date the return is accepted before checking refund status. State instructions for the 2025 filing season indicate that most e-filed returns are processed within 14 business days.

State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said in a January 2025 filing season announcement that refunds are typically issued within four weeks when returns are submitted electronically and do not require additional verification. The department continues to recommend e-filing combined with direct deposit as the fastest way to receive a Michigan tax refund.

Paper Returns Continue to Take Longer to Process

Paper-filed Michigan returns require more time to process. Treasury guidance instructs taxpayers to wait 6 to 8 weeks from the date a paper return is mailed before checking the refund status. Manual handling, missing documentation, and identity verification reviews are common reasons paper returns experience longer delays.

The department emphasizes that submitting complete documentation helps prevent additional processing delays.

Michigan Treasury Offers Multiple Refund Tracking Options

Taxpayers Check Status Through Treasury eServices

Taxpayers can monitor refund status via Michigan Treasury eServices, either through Account Services or Guest Services. Account Services requires creating an MILogin account and completing verification once per tax year to access "My Return Status” and other account information.

Guest Services allows taxpayers to use the “Where’s My Refund” tool without creating an account. Filers must provide the primary filer’s Social Security number, last name, tax year, filing status, and either adjusted gross income or total household resources.

What Michigan Filers Should Expect Next

Michigan tax refund timing depends primarily on whether a return requires identity verification and whether all requested documents are submitted correctly. Taxpayers who receive a verification letter are encouraged to respond promptly and follow instructions carefully to avoid extended delays.

The Treasury advises filers to wait the recommended timeframes before checking refund status and to ensure all identification and income records are complete before mailing documents. Returns that are missing required information are not processed until verification is resolved, which can push refunds beyond standard timelines.
