The Illinois Department of Revenue has announced the expected refund timelines for the 2025 filing season, as taxpayers begin submitting their state tax returns. Processing times vary depending on how returns are filed and whether additional review is required to verify taxpayer information or prevent fraud.

State Opens Filing Season With Refund Timeline

The Illinois Department of Revenue began accepting Illinois individual income tax returns for the 2025 tax year on January 27, 2026, matching the IRS start date for federal taxes. The department states that most Illinois taxpayers should receive their Illinois income tax refund within several weeks, although timelines depend on the filing method and accuracy.

Electronic filing remains the preferred option for faster processing. Taxpayers who choose to mail a paper return should expect longer processing times, as these returns require manual handling and additional verification related to Illinois state taxes.

Electronic Filers See Faster Refund Processing

Refund processing times differ significantly between electronically filed returns and paper submissions.

According to the Department of Revenue, electronically filed returns with direct deposit are typically processed within approximately four weeks. This timeline applies to most individual income tax returns that do not require additional review. Electronic filing reduces delays related to missing information, data-entry errors, and incomplete taxpayer details.

Paper returns take longer to process. Taxpayers who mail a paper return can expect a refund timeline of four to eight weeks. Delays are more likely when returns contain errors, missing schedules, or mismatched Social Security number information. Returns that require corrections may be removed from standard processing schedules.

Refund delivery can also be affected by bank account verification. If direct deposit information cannot be confirmed, the state may issue a paper check instead of sending funds to a checking account or savings account.

State Directs Taxpayers to Online Refund Tracking Tools

Illinois taxpayers can track their tax refund using the state’s Where’s My Refund online tool. The refund inquiry application updates on business days and typically shows processed refund information within 24 hours for e-filed returns.

The tool enables taxpayers to verify whether their Illinois state income tax return has been received, is currently under review, or has been approved. Once available, it also displays the refund amount associated with the return.

Comptroller Takes Over After Refund Approval

After the Illinois Department of Revenue completes refund processing, payment information is forwarded to the Illinois Comptroller’s Office. At that point, taxpayers can monitor payment through the Comptroller’s Find Your Illinois Tax Refund System.

The system provides refund disbursement dates and indicates whether payment will be issued by direct deposit or paper check. Direct deposit refunds typically appear in bank accounts within two business days after approval. Paper checks may take up to 10 business days to arrive by mail.

Security Reviews Continue to Delay Some Refunds

The Department of Revenue states that some Illinois tax refunds are being delayed due to identity theft screening and fraud prevention measures. Returns with inconsistent taxpayer information, unverified income such as W-2 income or 1099 forms, or other discrepancies may require additional review before approval.

The department also notes that contacting Taxpayer Assistance will not speed up the refund process. Phone representatives do not process returns, approve refunds, or alter processing schedules.

Revenue Department Urges Accuracy and Early Filing

Illinois taxpayers seeking faster refunds are encouraged to file electronically, carefully review all entries, and confirm Social Security numbers and bank account details before submitting Form IL-1040. Filing earlier in the season also helps avoid delays caused by peak processing volume.

The Department of Revenue advises taxpayers not to rely on a specific refund timeline for significant financial obligations. Refund processing times are estimates and may change if the Department of Revenue selects a return for review, correction, or identity verification.
