Instructions for Form 8863 Checklist — 2021 Tax Year
Form 8863 allows taxpayers to claim education credits for qualified tuition and related expenses
paid during the 2021 tax year. The American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit reduce your tax liability based on eligible educational costs incurred at postsecondary institutions.
Verify Your Eligibility for Education Credits
Eligibility for an education credit depends on whether you paid qualified education expenses for yourself, a spouse, or a dependent listed on your tax return. With the American Opportunity
Credit, a portion of the credit is refundable, up to 40 percent, capped at $1,000, even if no tax is owed.
In contrast, the Lifetime Learning Credit is strictly nonrefundable and can only be used to reduce an existing tax liability. The refundability rules for both credits follow the same structure used in prior years, as no temporary expansions applied in 2021.
Understand the 2021 Income Phase-Out Changes
The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, increased the Lifetime Learning Credit phase-out thresholds to match those of the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Both credits now phase out between $80,000 and $90,000 of modified adjusted gross income for single filers, while married couples filing jointly face a phase-out between $160,000 and $180,000.
Gather Documentation for Qualified Expenses
Collect receipts, tuition statements, and payment records showing expenses paid between
January and December 2021. The 1098-T form from your educational institution provides helpful information, though you must verify actual payments rather than relying solely on amounts reported in box 1.
You may claim expenses for academic periods beginning in the first three months of 2022 if you paid those costs during 2021. Include only payments made during the calendar year 2021, regardless of when the academic period began or ended.
Identify Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses
Qualified expenses for the American Opportunity Credit include tuition, mandatory enrollment fees, and course-related materials such as books, supplies, and required equipment. These items qualify even when purchased from third-party vendors, since the credit does not restrict purchases to the educational institution.
Under the Lifetime Learning Credit, eligible costs are limited to tuition and required enrollment fees. At the same time, books and supplies qualify only if the school requires payment as a condition of enrollment or attendance. Room and board are excluded in all cases and do not qualify as education expenses for Form 8863, regardless of the student’s enrollment status.
Calculate Credit Amounts and Limitations
Credit calculations differ by education benefit. For the American Opportunity Credit, the value equals 100 percent of the first $2,000 in qualified expenses and 25 percent of the next $2,000, resulting in a maximum credit of $2,500 per eligible student. By comparison, the Lifetime
Learning Credit is calculated at 20 percent of up to $10,000 in qualified expenses, with a maximum credit of $2,000 per tax return, regardless of the number of students with eligible costs.
Review American Opportunity Credit Student
Requirements
Eligibility for the American Opportunity Credit is limited to students who had not completed the first four years of postsecondary education at the beginning of 2021. A maximum of four tax years may be claimed per student, and those years do not have to be consecutive.
To qualify, enrollment must be at least half-time for one academic period during the tax year while pursuing a degree, certificate, or other recognized educational credential. No federal or state felony drug conviction may exist for the student as of the end of 2021.
Apply Lifetime Learning Credit Flexibility
The Lifetime Learning Credit has no limit on the number of years you may claim it for the same student. Students need not pursue a degree program, making this credit available for job skills courses and professional development at any educational level.
Complete Your Tax Return Accurately
Transfer the calculated credit from Form 8863 to the appropriate lines on Form 1040. The
American Opportunity Credit is split between refundable and nonrefundable portions, requiring entries on separate lines of your tax return.
Attach Form 8863 to your return when filing, whether you file electronically or by mail. Tax software typically guides you through the required entries and calculations for both education credits.
Coordinate with Other Tax Benefits
Qualified education expenses used to calculate education credits cannot be used to support tax-free distributions from 529 plans or Coverdell Education Savings Accounts for the exact costs. Scholarships and grants reduce qualified expenses unless the student includes the scholarship amount in their gross income and the scholarship terms permit its use for nonqualified expenses, such as room and board.
Veterans' educational assistance and employer-provided educational assistance also reduce your qualified expenses for credit calculation purposes. You may strategically allocate costs to different tax benefits to maximize your overall tax advantage when multiple options are available.
