Amended Return or Administrative Adjustment
Request (AAR) 1065-X 2024 Checklist
Filing Context for Amended Returns and AARs
Form 1065-X is used when a partnership corrects items reported on a previously filed partnership return through paper filing. The same form is also used to submit an Administrative
Adjustment Request for partnerships subject to the centralized partnership audit regime, which applies to partnership tax years beginning after 2017, including tax year 2024.
When correcting a partnership return for tax year 2024, the partnership must apply the law, regulations, and administrative guidance that govern that year. Corrections must reflect the rules applicable to the 2024 filing year, rather than relying on procedures that applied to earlier-reviewed years or on general assumptions based on prior practices.
Purpose and Application of Form 1065-X for 2024
Form 1065-X allows a partnership to correct partnership-level items such as income, deductions, credits, and other reported amounts for tax year 2024. For partnerships subject to the BBA rules, adjustments to partnership-related items are generally made through an
Administrative Adjustment Request rather than an amended return unless specific guidance permits an amended filing.
The form does not cater to their own returns using the appropriate partner-level procedures.
Determining the Proper Filing Method for 2024
Partnerships must determine whether corrections for tax year 2024 should be made through an amended return or an Administrative Adjustment Request. Partnerships subject to the BBA rules generally file an AAR, while non-BBA partnerships may file an amended return and issue amended Schedules K-1.
The partnership should also evaluate whether the corrections change information previously provided to partners. For non-BBA partnerships, changes are typically communicated through amended Schedules K-1. For BBA partnerships filing an AAR, amended Schedules K-1 are not furnished, and partner adjustments are transmitted using the required BBA adjustment forms.
Ten-Step Checklist for Completing Form 1065-X for 2024
Step 1: Assemble Supporting Documentation
Assemble all records related to the 2024 partnership return, including the originally filed Form
1065, Schedules K-1 issued to partners, and detailed workpapers supporting each proposed adjustment. Include the partnership operating agreement and any amendments that affect allocations or reporting for tax year 2024.
Step 2: Complete the Form Header and Filing Identification
Enter the partnership’s legal name, employer identification number, tax year 2024, and current mailing address in the Form 1065-X header. Complete the filing identification section by selecting the appropriate option based on whether the submission is an amended return or an
Administrative Adjustment Request.
Step 3: Enter Original Amounts in Column (a)
Report the amounts originally filed for each line item being corrected in column (a). Use figures from the original 2024 Form 1065 or from a previously adjusted filing, when applicable, to establish an accurate baseline for each correction.
Step 4: Report Net Changes and Corrected Amounts
Enter the net increase or decrease for each corrected line in column (b) and the corrected amount in column (c). Follow the column instructions carefully, because reporting requirements differ by section of Form 1065-X and affect how changes are calculated and presented.
Step 5: Provide Clear Explanations for Each Change
Explain every adjustment reported on Form 1065-X using the designated explanation section and any required attachments. Each explanation should describe the nature of the change, identify the affected line numbers, and show how the corrected amounts were determined for tax year 2024.
Step 6: Attach Required Schedules and Forms
Attach all schedules, statements, and forms necessary to support the corrected amounts.
Non-BBA partnerships include amended Schedules K-1 and furnish them to partners, while BBA partnerships filing an AAR include the required adjustment forms and do not attach amended
Schedules K-1.
Step 7: Confirm Partner-Level Information Support
Review the corrected partnership reporting to ensure it provides partners with the information needed to apply partner-level limitations. This includes information relevant to basis, at-risk limitations, and passive activity rules that partners apply when preparing their own returns.
Step 8: Evaluate Basis and Allocation Impacts
Determine whether the corrections affect partner basis-related inputs, including changes to allocations, contributions, or distributions reflected in the partnership’s reporting. Maintain detailed workpapers that support these changes and document how corrected amounts affect partner-level calculations.
Step 9: Sign and Date the Form Using Proper Authority
The appropriate individual should sign and date Form 1065-X. For a BBA partnership filing an
AAR, the partnership representative or designated individual must sign the form; for a non-BBA partnership filing an amended return, a partner, LLC member, or fiduciary must sign when applicable.

Step 10: File the Form by the Applicable Deadline
File Form 1065-X and all required attachments by the applicable deadline for tax year 2024. In general, an amended return, or AAR, must be filed within three years after the later of the date the return was filed or the last day for filing that return, excluding extensions, subject to
BBA-specific limitations.
Partner Communications and Reporting Flow
Corrections to a 2024 partnership return may affect information previously provided to partners.
Non-BBA partnerships typically communicate changes by furnishing amended Schedules K-1, while BBA partnerships communicate adjustments through the required partner adjustment forms without issuing amended Schedules K-1.
The partnership should identify which partners are affected by each correction and ensure communications align with the filing method used. Clear and timely communication facilitates accurate partner compliance and minimizes the need for follow-up inquiries regarding corrected partnership reporting.
Form-Specific Limitations for 2024 Filings
Form 1065-X corrects partnership-level reporting and does not determine partner-level tax liabilities. Certain taxes, limitations, and elections apply at the partner level and are addressed on the partner’s own return using information provided by the partnership.
For non-BBA partnerships, changes that affect partner information are reflected on amended
Schedules K-1. For BBA partnerships, partner-level effects are handled through the BBA adjustment framework rather than amended Schedules K-1.
Filing Mechanics and Record Retention Requirements
File Form 1065-X with the service center where the original 2024 partnership return was filed.
Submit the form as a complete package with all attachments included to reduce the risk of processing delays or correspondence requesting missing information.
Retain copies of the filed Form 1065-X, all attachments, and supporting workpapers as part of the partnership’s permanent records. Organized record retention supports future inquiries, partner questions, and compliance reviews related to the corrected 2024 filing.
Line Structure and Form Revision Considerations
Use the Form 1065-X revision that corresponds to tax year 2024 and follow the form’s column structure and explanation requirements. Reporting formats and instructions may change over time, and using the correct revision ensures consistency with 2024 reporting standards.
Accurate adherence to the 2024 form structure supports proper processing and ensures the corrected filing aligns with the rules governing partnership returns for that year.
