2020 Form 1040 Paper-Filing Checklist

The 2020 Form 1040 introduced three pivotal pandemic-relief mechanisms: Recovery Rebate Credit reconciliation for Economic Impact Payments 1 and 2, temporary above-the-line charitable deduction for standard-deduction filers up to $300, and qualified sick and family leave credits for self-employed individuals. Additionally, estimated tax payments previously located on Schedule 3 have been relocated to Form 1040, line 26, and the virtual currency question has been moved from Schedule 1 to the first page for immediate taxpayer disclosure.

Tax-Year-Specific Programs for 2020

The Recovery Rebate Credit must be claimed on Form 1040 line 30 if you did not receive the full first or second Economic Impact Payment amount. The credit amount is based on your 2020 adjusted gross income, filing status, and number of qualifying dependents. If you received Economic Impact Payments based on your 2018 or 2019 tax return but your circumstances changed in 2020, you may be eligible for additional credit amounts.

The 2020 unemployment compensation exclusion allows up to $10,200 of unemployment compensation to be excluded from income per taxpayer with a modified adjusted gross income of less than $150,000. For married filing jointly filers, each spouse may exclude up to $10,200, totaling up to $20,400 for the household. The exclusion is reported on Schedule 1, line 8, with the notation “UCE”. Qualified sick and family leave credits for self-employed individuals who earn a net profit must be reported on Schedule 3, line 12b, via Form 7202 for leave periods from April 1 through December 31, 2020.

Comprehensive Ten-Step Filing Process

Step 1: Confirm Filing Requirement and Status

Verify your gross income meets the 2020 threshold requiring you to file: $12,400 for single filers, $24,800 for married filing jointly, $14,050 for single filers age 65 or older, and $26,100 for married filing jointly with one spouse age 65 or older. Confirm your filing status from the five available options: Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow(er) with Dependent Child. If you were born before January 2, 1956, you may use Form 1040-SR instead of Form 1040, which provides a more accessible format with larger print and standard deduction charts.

Step 2: Gather Income Documentation

Collect all Forms W-2 showing wages, salaries, and tips received from employers. Obtain all Forms 1099, including 1099-INT for interest income, 1099-DIV for dividends, 1099-OID for original issue discount, 1099-R for IRA and pension distributions, 1099-SSA for Social Security benefits, Schedule K-1 for partnership and S corporation income, 1099-NEC for nonemployee compensation, and 1099-K for payment card transactions.

If you received unemployment compensation in 2020, gather Form 1099-G and calculate any excludable amount. You can exclude up to $10,200 per taxpayer with a modified adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less. For married spouses filing jointly, each spouse may exclude up to $10,200 of their income. Report the exclusion on Schedule 1, line 8, with “UCE” notation.

Step 3: Reconcile Economic Impact Payments

Locate Notices 1444 showing the first Economic Impact Payment and 1444-B showing the second Economic Impact Payment with exact amounts received. If your 2020 adjusted gross income differs significantly from your 2018 or 2019 income, or if your number of qualifying dependents changed, you may be eligible for Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30. Complete the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet from the Form 1040 instructions.

This credit is only claimed by filing a 2020 return and is reduced by any first or second Economic Impact Payment amounts you already received. The total credit equals $1,200 per qualifying adult plus $500 per qualifying child for the first payment, and $600 per qualifying adult and child for the second payment, subject to income phaseouts.

Step 4: Identify Capital Gains, Losses, and Schedule D Requirements

If you sold capital assets, including stocks, bonds, real estate, mutual funds, or cryptocurrency in 2020, gather all transaction confirmations showing sale proceeds and cost basis. If you have capital gain or loss transactions, you may need to attach Schedule D. Virtual currency purchases alone do not trigger reporting requirements.

Answer “Yes” to the virtual currency question on page 1 only if you received virtual currency as payment for goods or services, sold virtual currency, exchanged virtual currency for other property, or otherwise disposed of virtual currency during 2020. Holding virtual currency as an investment without any transactions requires a “No” answer.

Step 5: Determine Deduction Method and Charitable Contributions

Calculate the standard deduction for your filing status and age. For 2020, standard deductions are $12,400 for single filers, $24,800 for married filing jointly, and $18,650 for head of household. If you are 65 or older and blind, add the amount to your standard deduction. You should itemize your Schedule A deductions if they are greater than the standard deduction.

Otherwise, claim the standard deduction. If you claimed the standard deduction and made cash contributions to qualified charities in 2020, you may deduct up to $300 on line 10b without itemizing. Report the charitable deduction amount on line 10b. Do not itemize on Schedule A if using this above-the-line deduction.

Step 6: Report Business, Farm, Rental, and Self-Employment Income

If you are self-employed, complete Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business) and Schedule SE (Self-Employment Tax). Report farm income on Schedule F. Report rental income on Schedule E. If you received Paycheck Protection Program funds in 2020 and had qualifying expenses forgiven, the forgiveness is excluded from income under the Consolidated Appropriations Act.

If you claimed qualified sick and family leave credits in 2020 for the period April 1 through December 31, complete Form 7202 and report credits on Schedule 3, line 12b. Report all additional income from Schedule 1, line 9, on Form 1040, line 8.

Step 7: Attach Required Schedules and Forms

Attach Schedule 1 if you have additional income, adjustments to income, or unemployment compensation exclusion. Attach Schedule 2 if you owe alternative minimum tax from Form 6251, excess advance premium tax credit repayment from Form 8962, self-employment tax from Schedule SE, or other additional taxes. Attach Schedule 3 for nonrefundable credits, including foreign tax credit and education credits from Form 8863, and for refundable credits, including premium tax credit from Form 8962 and sick and family leave credits from Form 7202.

Attach Schedule D if you have capital gains and losses. Attach Form 8995 or 8995-A if you claim the qualified business income deduction on line 13. Attach Schedule 8812 if claiming additional child tax credit on line 28.

Step 8: Complete Tax and Credits Lines

Enter tax on line 16 using the 2020 tax table or tax rate schedules. Check box one if using Form 8814 for parent election of child’s unearned income, or box two if using Form 4972 for lump-sum distributions. Add Schedule 2, line 3 on line 17. Report child tax credit or credit for other dependents on line 19, calculating using the worksheet in the instructions or attaching Schedule 8812. Add Schedule 3, line 7, to line 20 for the total of other credits. Subtract line 21 (sum of lines 19 and 20) from line 18 to determine tax after credits on line 22. Add Schedule 2, line 10, for other taxes on line 23 to calculate the total tax on line 24.

Step 9: Report Withholding and Payments

Report federal income tax withheld from Forms W-2 on line 25a, from Forms 1099 on line 25b, and from other forms on line 25c. On line 26, report the total 2020 estimated tax payments made via Form 1040-ES vouchers, plus any 2019 overpayment applied to 2020. On line 27, claim the earned income credit if eligible, using Schedule EIC to report qualifying children.

On line 28, report additional child tax credit from Schedule 8812. On line 29, report the refundable American Opportunity Credit from Form 8863, line 8. On line 30, report the Recovery Rebate Credit if you did not receive the complete first and second Economic Impact Payments.

Step 10: Sign, Date, and File

Verify all required information is complete, including your name, spouse’s name if filing jointly, Social Security numbers, address, filing status, and dependent information with Social Security numbers. Sign and date the return. Both spouses must sign if filing jointly. If a tax professional prepared the return, obtain their signature, date, PTIN, and firm information in the paid preparer section.

Verify correct assembly: Form 1040, then Schedule 1, Schedule 2, Schedule 3, Schedule D if applicable, Schedule SE if applicable, Schedule C if applicable, Form 8812 if applicable, Form 8962 if applicable, Form 7202 if applicable, Form 8863 if applicable, Form 8995 or 8995-A if applicable, and any other required schedules and forms. Mail to the appropriate IRS address based on your state of residence, as listed on the IRS "Where to File" page for the 2020 Form 1040.

Notable 2020 Form Changes

Line 10b introduced an above-the-line charitable contribution deduction for 2020. In previous years, taxpayers were required to itemize deductions on Schedule A to claim charitable contributions. For 2020, taxpayers taking the standard deduction may claim up to $300 for cash contributions to qualified charities on line 10b without itemizing.

Line 26 relocated estimated tax payments from Schedule 3, line 8, in prior years to Form 1040, line 26, for 2020, providing more prominent visibility of prepayments on the primary return. The virtual currency question, which was previously located in Schedule 1, was moved to page 1 of Form 1040 for 2020, requiring immediate taxpayer disclosure at the beginning of the return.

Form-Specific Limitations

Nonresident aliens must file Form 1040-NR, not Form 1040. Recovery Rebate Credit eligibility requires a valid Social Security number for employment purposes. Dependents cannot claim certain credits, including the earned income credit, the additional child tax credit, or the Recovery Rebate Credit, on their return. If married filing separately, each spouse’s standard deduction is $12,400. Joint filers’ standard deduction is $24,800.

Premium tax credit reconciliation using Form 8962 is mandatory if any advance credit payments were made through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Failure to attach Form 8962 may delay processing of your return.

Conclusion

Completing the 2020 Form 1040 requires careful attention to pandemic-relief provisions, including the Recovery Rebate Credit, unemployment compensation exclusion, and above-the-line charitable deduction. Understanding the relocation of key reporting lines, proper documentation of all income sources, and accurate calculation of credits and payments ensures complete and accurate tax reporting while maximizing available tax benefits under the 2020 law.
