IRS Form 1040A Tax Year 2016: Paper-Filed Checklist
2016 Tax Year Context
Form 1040A for 2016 remains a simplified three-income-source return: wages, interest, dividends, and specific retirement income. The 2016 tax year introduced mandatory health coverage reporting on line 38 and required premium tax credit reconciliation via Form 8962 for taxpayers receiving advance marketplace subsidies—a direct consequence of Affordable Care Act implementation that decade. The $4,050 personal exemption and standardized deductions ($6,300 single; $12,600 MFJ; $9,300 HOH) applied; no annual adjustment occurred from 2015.
Year-Specific Programs and Requirements: 2016
The Affordable Care Act shared responsibility payment requirement remained active for 2016 tax year filers. Suppose any household member lacked qualifying health coverage or an exemption for any month of 2016, line 38 required reporting or payment reconciliation via Form 8962. Premium tax credit advance payments received from the Marketplace require mandatory reconciliation on Form 8962, which must be attached to the paper return.
Ten-Step Paper-Filing Checklist: Form 1040A, Tax Year 2016
Step 1: Verify Eligibility for Form 1040A
Confirm taxable income is below $100,000. Form 1040A cannot be used if income includes self-employment, rental real estate, capital gains, losses, business income, or farm income. Cannot file Form 1040A if claiming Earned Income Tax Credit with a qualifying child and using Form 1040EZ; must use 1040A or 1040.
Step 2: Gather and Verify Identification Documents
Obtain Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ATINs) for you, your spouse (if filing jointly), and each qualifying child claimed. These identification numbers must be issued on or before the return due date (including extensions) for the taxpayer and each child claimed for credits. Failure to have valid identification by the filing deadline permanently disqualifies you from claiming the Child Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit on the original or any amended return.
Step 3: Assemble Income Documents
Collect all 2016 Forms W-2 (wages), 1099-INT (taxable interest), 1099-OID (original issue discount), 1099-DIV (dividends and capital gain distributions), 1099-R (IRA, pension, annuity distributions), and 1099-G (unemployment compensation). If you received Marketplace health insurance with advance premium tax credit payments, obtain Form 1095-A from the Marketplace by early February 2017. Do not attach Form 1095-A to your return; use it only to complete Form 8962.
Step 4: Complete Income Lines (Lines 7–15)
Enter wages on line 7. Enter taxable interest on line 8a and tax-exempt interest on line 8b (not included in taxable). Enter ordinary dividends on line 9a and qualified dividends on line 9b. Enter capital gain distributions on line 10. Enter IRA distributions (line 11a) and taxable amount (line 11b). Enter pensions and annuities (line 12a and taxable 12b). Enter unemployment compensation (line 13). Enter Social Security benefits (line 14a) and taxable amount (line 14b) using Social Security income calculation rules from the 1040A instructions. Add all income lines to reach total income (line 15).
Step 5: Complete Adjustments to Income (Lines 16–21)
Enter educator expenses on line 16 (if applicable). Enter IRA deduction on line 17 (within phase-out limits). Enter student loan interest deduction on line 18. Enter tuition and fees on line 19 (attach Form 8917 if claimed). Sum adjustments (line 20). Subtract adjustments from total income to calculate Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on line 21.
Step 6: Determine Standard Deduction (Lines 22–24)
Transfer AGI to line 22. Check boxes on line 23a if you or your spouse were born before January 2, 1952, or are blind; the box count affects the standard deduction. If you were born on January 2, 1952, you are considered to be 65 years old at year-end 2016. Standard deduction amounts: Single $6,300; Married Filing Jointly $12,600; Head of Household $9,300. If age 65 or older or blind, add $1,550 (single or HOH) or $1,250 (MFJ) to the base standard deduction. Enter total standard deduction on line 24.
Step 7: Calculate Taxable Income (Lines 25–27)
Subtract standard deduction (line 24) from AGI (line 22); enter result on line 25 (minimum –0–). Multiply $4,050 by total exemptions (line 6d) and enter on line 26. Subtract exemptions (line 26) from line 25 to arrive at taxable income (line 27, minimum –0–).
Step 8: Determine Tax Liability and Health Responsibility Payment (Lines 28–30)
Calculate tax using 2016 tax tables or worksheets on line 28 (include any alternative minimum tax). Complete Form 8962 and enter excess advance premium tax credit repayment on line 29 if you received Marketplace advance payments in 2016. Add lines 28 and 29 to calculate the total tax on line 30. Attest that you, your spouse (if filing jointly), and any claimed dependent had qualifying health coverage all of 2016, or attach Form 8965 to claim an exemption, or report health coverage individual responsibility payment on line 38.
Step 9: Claim All Applicable Credits (Lines 31–36)
Enter child and dependent care credit on line 31 (attach Form 2441). Enter credit for elderly or disabled on line 32 (attach Schedule R if applicable). Enter education credits from Form 8863 on line 33. Enter retirement savings contributions credit on line 34 (attach Form 8880). Enter Child Tax Credit on line 35 (attach Schedule 8812 if required; verify each qualifying child is under age 17 at year-end 2016, meets seven qualifying conditions, and has an SSN issued by the filing deadline). Sum credits (line 36).
Subtract total credits (line 36) from total tax (line 30) on line 37 (minimum –0–). Report health coverage status on line 38 (check “Full-year coverage” box if applicable).
Step 10: Complete Payments and Refund or Amount Owed (Lines 39–50, Signature)
Add lines 37 and 38 for total tax (line 39). Enter Federal income tax withheld from W-2 and 1099 forms (line 40). Enter 2016 estimated tax payments and amount applied from 2015 return (line 41). Claim Earned Income Credit if eligible with Schedule EIC (line 42a). Enter Additional Child Tax Credit if eligible via Schedule 8812 (line 43). Enter American Opportunity Credit from Form 8863 (line 44). Enter net premium tax credit (Form 8962) on line 45 (only if you did not receive advance payments; if you did, reconcile on Form 8962 and enter adjustment on line 29 instead). Sum all payments (line 46). Calculate refund (line 47 if line 46 exceeds line 39) or amount owed (line 50 if line 39 exceeds line 46).
Sign, date, and include your occupation and daytime phone number. If filing jointly, your spouse must also sign and date the return. Attach all required supporting forms (Schedule R, Form 2441, Schedule 8812, Form 8917, Form 8863, Form 8880, Form 8962, Form 8965) and W-2s in order. Mail the paper return by April 18, 2017 (filing deadline for 2016 returns).
Form-Specific Limitations for 1040A, 2016
Restriction 1: No Itemized Deductions
Form 1040A filers cannot itemize deductions on Schedule A. You must use the standard deduction. If your deductible expenses exceed the standard deduction, you must file Form 1040 instead.
Restriction 2: Limited Income and Credit Eligibility
Nonresidents and partial-year residents are not eligible to use Form 1040A; instead, they must file Form 1040NR. Form 1040A does not allow business income, rental real estate income, capital losses, net operating losses, or pass-through entity income (partnerships, S corporations, trusts). Certain credits (Alternative Minimum Tax, Self-employment tax adjustments, foreign tax credits, certain educational credits under specific scenarios) require Form 1040.
