North Carolina Direct File No Longer Available for 2026 Filing Season

North Carolina residents who relied on IRS Direct File during the 2025 filing season should be aware that the program is no longer available. Direct File was a free, secure IRS tool available for the 2025 filing season that allowed eligible North Carolina taxpayers to file federal and state taxes online. The program was suspended by the IRS and will not be available for the 2026 filing season.
What Happened to IRS Direct File
Direct File launched as a limited pilot in 2024 and expanded to 25 states, including North Carolina, for the 2025 filing season. The tool received positive user reviews but drew fewer filers than the agency had anticipated. On November 3, IRS official Cindy Noe informed state tax offices by email that Direct File was closed for the 2025 tax filing season and would not be coming back. The agency's notification to state revenue departments stated: "IRS Direct File will not be available in Filing Season 2026. No launch date has been set for the future."
Taxpayers who used Direct File in 2025 can access a summary of their federal return online via their IRS account. Note that Direct File cannot be used to file an amended return; taxpayers who need to correct a previously filed return should use the standard Form 1040-X process.
How North Carolina Residents Can Still File for Free
The end of Direct File does not eliminate free filing options for North Carolina residents. NC Free File continues to provide free electronic filing services to taxpayers who meet specific income limits, through partnerships with approved software providers. Taxpayers can access no-cost products through the NCDOR's NC Free File page, though they should ensure any selected product supports the forms they intend to file.
There are several options available to e-file a state tax return for free if you qualify, or through approved third-party tax preparation software products. Commercial software products remain available for individuals with more complex situations or who want added features, and these programs may involve a fee.
What North Carolina Taxpayers Should Do Now
Residents filing a 2025 tax return for the current season should review the available free and paid filing options through the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Those who owe a balance can request an extension, apply for payment arrangements, or submit their return by mail if preferred. Anyone who needs to correct a previously filed return should file an amended return using Form 1040-X rather than through any Direct File channel, which is no longer operational.
The Department of Revenue provides filing instructions in both English and Spanish. Taxpayers with straightforward income situations—such as W-2 wages, standard deductions, and common credits—may still find no-cost options through NC Free File that cover their needs.
