The Internal Revenue Service has upgraded its Small Business Resource Center on IRS.gov, introducing new tools and guidance to help small business owners meet their federal tax obligations. Announced during National Small Business Week 2025, the update is part of the agency’s ongoing effort to make tax compliance more straightforward and more accessible for small businesses and self-employed taxpayers.

Employment Taxes and Business Taxes Now Easier to Navigate

The redesigned center consolidates information on employment taxes, business taxes, and related filing requirements into one platform. It provides small businesses with instructions for filing returns, calculating payroll withholdings, and meeting quarterly reporting deadlines.

According to the IRS, the updated site aims to “reduce confusion and help business taxpayers find what they need without delay.” The center also provides step-by-step guidance for various business entities, ranging from sole proprietors to corporations, along with access to industry-specific tax information and resources.

Tax Payments Simplified Through the Federal Tax Payment System

The IRS is directing business taxpayers to the Federal Tax Payment System, officially known as the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), as the primary method for submitting federal tax payments. The system allows users to make payments online or by phone without additional fees.

Taxpayers can schedule payments in advance, verify transactions, and receive email confirmations once funds are processed. The Treasury Department states that payments are typically completed within one to two business days, thereby improving accuracy and transparency in how businesses manage their federal obligations.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System Offers Flexible Access

The electronic federal tax payment system allows businesses to make payments from a financial institution or via a mobile device at any time. The platform provides detailed records of each transaction, helping owners maintain proper documentation for annual reporting.

IRS officials noted that businesses using EFTPS “benefit from faster confirmation, reduced paperwork, and improved compliance oversight.” The agency recommends the system for all taxpayers who make recurring payments throughout the year.

New Enrollments and Identification Number Assistance

The updated IRS Small Business Resource Center also streamlines new enrollments for business accounts and offers guidance on obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN). The EIN application process is available 24 hours a day, free of charge, and provides immediate confirmation once complete.

Business owners can use their identification number to open bank accounts, file federal returns, and manage electronic payments. The IRS also outlines the requirements for EINs when applying for installment agreements or changing business structures.

Estimated Tax Guidance for Self-Employed Taxpayers

For self-employed individuals, the center includes tools to calculate and schedule estimated tax payments. These resources explain how to determine quarterly payment amounts, when payments are due, and how to avoid underpayment penalties.

The IRS urges business owners to plan for the next estimated tax payment deadline in June 2025 and to check the center regularly for updates on filing requirements and special rules affecting small businesses.

Next Steps for Small Business Owners

The IRS encourages entrepreneurs to review the updated resource center and enroll in EFTPS before the next payment cycle. Verifying EIN and banking information early can help prevent delays in processing tax payments or filings.

Business owners can also subscribe to IRS e-News for Small Businesses to receive updates on employment taxes, rule changes, and disaster relief notices. The agency continues to promote recordkeeping, accurate reporting, and the use of authorized payment systems to ensure compliance with federal tax laws.
